TOUR DESCRIPTION. The famous Doi Suthep temple is found on a mountain just a short distance from the historic centre of Chiang Mai (about 20 kilometres) and is about a thousand metres above sea level. The visit to Doi Suthep can be considered a milestone in understanding local culture and tradition. In fact, Thais often utter the saying “Those who haven’t visited Doi Suthep, haven’t really been to Chiang Mai”. The golden pagoda situated inside the temple was built in 1383 and according to legend contains the sacred relics of the Buddha himself. To get to the temple you can either walk up the 304 steps, or take the cable car depending on whether you like walking or prefer comfort. The visit to Doi Suthep is aimed to coincide with sunset so that you can admire Chiang Mai from above with the setting sun. After visiting Doi Suthep we will return to Chiang Mai to try a typical Thai dinner with characteristic dances and shows. This dinner with a show is known as the “Kantoke” and has roots that go back to the customs and traditions of the ancient Lanna Kingdom which once dominated what is now Northern Thailand.
